WRITING FOR THE WEB

We are experiencing a technological revolution in communication. The cost and scale of operations required to produce, disseminate and exchange information have fallen dramatically. There are more than two billion pages available on the web. A few minutes of surfing will reveal a wide variety in the quality of these documents. Some are very attractive, even stunning. Others are rather ugly, perhaps "noisy," nearly illegible, or littered with grammatical, punctuation and spelling errors. But it's important to look beyond the broad appearance of a page to its content. Does it contain useful information that is easily absorbed, or is it somehow confusing?

Poor writing is easy to find online. Authors may feel pressure to "get the page up" and simply not take the time to do it right. This practice is no doubt encouraged by the fact that a product may be quite short-lived, possibly surviving for only a few days. Many sites place considerable emphasis on so-called "bells and whistles," e.g. scrolling banners, blinking text, or elaborate animated graphics.

Good writing is a critical factor in any document produced by MMI. Acquiring information should be a pleasant experience, not one you have to fight your way through. [HOME] [Contact Us]
